13-Jan-2018 Logan Barber does Aussie new hardest trad crack.
Australian climber Logan Barber has established the hardest pure crack climb in Australia, Japanese Deep Freeze (31/5.13d), at Mt. Buffalo, Victoria.

The short, power-endurance line, which has remained an open project since the 1990s, involves a shallow, flaring 0.75 granite crack on overhanging terrain and challenging gear placements.

After their successful ascents of Shark Hunt, Barber and Vertrees shifted their attention to Japanese ... [ More ]

Black Ians Rocks
Location: Black Ians
Leader: Rhys Boyar
Details: Black Ians Rocks is in the Black Range in The Grampians. It has a well deserved reputation for superb crack climbing in the intermediate grades, as well as a range of other styles of climbing. The crag now also has a number of mostly harder sport routes. Black Ians is also a perfect winter crag, with most of the routes catching any available sunshine. But be prepared for a bruised ego while learning to climb cracks! Learning to crack climb can open up a whole new world of inspiring climbing linesthat will take you up some of the best rock in the world. Not only that, a nice hand jam on a climb can give you a well-earned rest whilst others flounder and get pumped. All levels of climbing experience are welcome, but Beginner numbers may be limited depending on the numbers of experienced climbers on the trip. Prior crack climbing experience is not essential - Black Ians is a great place to learn. The sandstone at Black Ians is no where near as unforgiving as at Buffalo or Mt Alexander. Please contact Rhys Boyar, the Trip Leader, prior to the trip for more information. Photos: A sample of an fist jam at Black Ians and Rhys Boyar, the Trip Leader. [ More ]
28/06/2018-7:00p:30pm - VCC Club Nights @ Gravity Worx (June)
Location: Gravity Worx Indoor Climbing Gym
Leader: Mark Rippingale
Details: The VCC are holding regular Club Nights at Gravity Worx Indoor Climbing Gym. For 2018 these will be held fortnightly on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. We will be climbing on Thursday the 14th and 28th June. These Club Nights are relaxed and informal. The idea is that you can come along without a climbing partner and join in with other VCC members. It gives you the opportunity to meet other VCC members and find regular climbing partners. Or you could climb without a partner using one of the 16 auto-belays available. Perfect for those wanting to do some endurance training. Continuous climbing on these tall walls will certainly do the trick. Gravity Worx sets new routes very regularly, so it is an excellent venue for training your onsighting skills too. Mark Rippingale will be the official 'Trip Leader' on these VCC Nights. So find Mark when you arrive and have signed in. There is no need to contact Mark prior to these nights - just turn up ready to climb. For these VCC Nights, the cost of entry for VCC members is $15, plus gear if needed. This is a heavily discounted entry for VCC members. Beginners are most welcome. End of the Month @ Araps/Djurite - June
Location: Mount Arapiles
Leader: Ben Wright
Details: Cooler weather means great friction what better reason is there to visitMt Arapilesin June? Enjoy the sun on the Watchtower slabs or on the sunny side of Mitre Rock. Get up (reasonably) early and catch the warming rays on the nearby classicsand well-worn trade routes in the Organ Pipes. Maybe explore some new areas in The Northern Group. Note the date change since the original posting. We will be camping in The Pines, close to the action. There is no better rock to fondle than the hard quartzite of Arapiles, so contact your Trip Leader, Ben Wright,to register your interest. These EOM@Araps/Djurite trips are intended for all levels of climbers, however Beginner spaces will be limited by the number of experienced leaders who come along. It is recommended that Beginners contact the Trip Leader as soon as possible. All intending participants must contact the trip leader prior to the trip. Mountain Weekend July - VCC MTN 1
Location: Victorian High Country
Leader: Philipp Hammes
Details: It's never too early to start mountaineering ... except if there's no snow ?however our statistics junkie figured out that this is the first weekend with guaranteed natural cover. Join Matt, Petey and Philipp in this endeavourto find the little pockets of mountaineering adventures in Australia. We'll try to tackle some steep snow and ice in the beautiful Victorian backcountry. Depending on weather conditions and how we fancy a long drive, there are a number of locations where we might end up. These include: Bogong South Face The Bluff North Face Mt Buller West Ridge Mt Feathertop Avalanche Ridge. The general schedule will be the same: Camping at the base of the mountain on Friday night >> walk, climb and play on Saturday, establish camp Saturday night >> more playtime and return to Melbourne on Sunday. This trip is only suitable for advanced climbers which means you own an ice-axe or preferably ice-tools, some crampons and a climbing helmet and know how to use them. On top of that you have to be a VCC member and be known to the trip leaders. Adequate skill and fitness levels are necessary. These are firm club requirements. We kindly ask everyone who signs up to commit 100%, since places are extremely limited. Trip Leaders: Matt Scattergood, Petey Mason and Philipp Hammes Contact Philipp, the Trip Leader, to secure your place or to get more information about mountaineering in the VCC. [ More ]

Crag X and The Solarium
Location: Victoria Range, Grampians
Leader: Rhys Boyar
Details: Crag X and The Solarium are in the Red Rocks area of the Victoria Range in the SW Grampians. The area has recently undergone a transformation. It used to consist mostly of a few harder trad routes from the late 80s, but now it has been reborn as a sport climbing area. The sport climbs are mostly in the Grade 18-24 range, with a few either side. The Solarium is a perfect winter crag, with most routes catching any of the available sunshine that the 'Climbing Gods' are willing to provide. All levels of climbing experience are welcome, but beginner numbers will be limited. Beginners need to contact Rhys to ensure that their experience and skills are adequate for the crags. The quoted grades don't lie - you need to be able to climb those numbers! We will probably be bush camping, so it is essential to contact Rhys, the Trip Leader, before the trip. [ More ]
