Climb Gramps this Weekend....need lift!

after a few washed out trips recently, my climbing partner injured his back this week, ruling out our chance at decent weather in the gramps this weekend, 21-22 july.

Looking for someone to climb with, and who can give me a lift up there from melbourne. I can sport (21), trad (16) or bouldering (v4).

I have all the gear, and the patience, for any beginners that are interested.

You can boulder v4 but can't climb harder than 21? You've gotta start focusing on your mind game.

Given recent grading trends those grades are about the same.

Haha, you're misinterpreting that shit. The gr21 on bolts means he needs to focus on holding onto the rock for longer than 30 seconds at once. The gr16 on gear indicates a need to focus on mental aspects..........and skills........and endurance.......lets face it, the dude probably just needs to learn how to climb!

As opposed to what? ... especially given that he is trying to get out there and do it!

... I hope his patience also extends to being flamed unnessecarily on Chocky.

Oh yeah, it's great that the bloke is keen to get out on anything, only way to learn. I was just having a mean-spirited laugh at the amusingly lopsided skill set. Being able to boulder V4 would probably get you through the crux of most gr26 gear routes.............as long as it's proper, old school V4 :)

I want to improve all my styles of climbing which i need to get outdoors to do, which is the whole point of this thread...not my climbing abilities. I simply put them there as a guide for potential partners depending on the climbing they do.

but as you seem to need to know, and i don't mind explaining (my patient side).

My trad grades are lacking because I'm yet to fall on my gear...so i need more experience = need more outdoor climbing

My sport grades are low because i don't climb sport much so i lack endurance = need more outdoor climbing (which strangely enough will improve my confidence trad climbing)

My bouldering grades seem higher because i boulder in the gyms and do a bit outdoors when i can. its my favourite style of climbing = want more outdoor climbing

I pushed my trad grades and have only ever fallen on gear ~5 times. I have faffed around aiding simple, easy cracks, though. I don't practise (or practice) falling as a standard routine on any style. the point of climing is to stay on, not fall off...

I don't think they're necessarily inter-twined, especially as someone growing up int he gramps/araps area. Placing a crap load of gear on many well worn routes is what will give you trad confidence. Araps is perfect for that.

You can still do loops/interlink boulder problems in order to increase your endurance. and/or reversing problems or simply doing multiple laps with little rest in between.
Anyway, I didn't mean to get this whole thread started on it (there's another thread about the links between limits on different styles elsewhere on chockstone) but hey, there you go :-)
enjoy the climbing!

In defence of our protagonist, Sean's predominantly a boulderer and spends a lot less time on rope, i.e. he has limited climbing endurance, and has little faith in gear so only likes absolutely bomb proof placements.

Sean's a good guy, I'd climb with him if I could make up a good excuse to get out of my other appointments.

PS I think I did my first V4 boulder problem when my highest sport lead was 21 and highest trad lead 17, but then I'm a gym noob too.

i think the the grades you mention, and then this throw away line about beginners being tollerated by your patience, is what got you the flaming.
Most of us climb to whatever level we can, but are still beginners at the level above.

Probably this one or maybe this one!

I didn't start any form of flame and ODH is.. well, ODH. I was referring to, as ODH put it, his "lopsided skill set", I didn't even take note of his beginner line. With the exception of slabby ones, I don't think I've sent a V5, but my sport and trad abilities are a few numbers higher than his (including on overhanging routes).
It was an aside, that if he really can do v4s then his mind game can be tuned to get those other grades higher. And, by him requesting to get out there, I guess that's his goal. Good on him.

woah there....wasn't saying it the way your reading it and i never mentioned anything about tolerance. if you read something online and you assume its negative...reread and rethink because you probably just misinterpreted the meaning.

I have climbed with many beginners, and been there my self as everyone has, and most of the time they are worried that they don't know enough and that they are preventing others from climbing due to their lack of experience and just generally feeling bad if their slowing everything down.

i'm just happy to get out there and climb anything, including the low graded stuff and at any pace. I only put the grades up for climbers that climb much harder than that who might not be looking to climb with someone that will struggle on the routes they want to climb.

Alright, I'm having trouble finding someone to head to the Cathedrals with me. Something about snow and people prefering that to climbing..... I lived in Canada for 2 years, I can't say I see the draw in the white stuff, but hey.

Back on topic (or what I think the topic is) I guess I could be convinced to drive to the gramps. Unless you want to head to the Cathedrals instead. Either way I have a car and nothing else to do. Email me and we'll sort something out.
