Encouraging a mate to climb, then he gets injured 27-Jan-2010 At 4:46:41 PM bones

Hey all,

Was climbing at Camels Hump yesterday. A mate wanted to have a crack at leading Poxbow(17). It was a couple of grades above anything he'd lead before, but I thought he'd be OK as I remembered having no troubles with it a few years previously. The guides say well protected and it looked like there was plenty of gear.

Problem was my mate fell at the top overhang after freaking out mid-crux, tumbled dramatically, broke his heel-bone on the ledge and inverted before the rope went tight. His gear was fine, but it was a messy fall. A few months in a cast for him.

While he was pulling the crux I was shouting things like "Come on mate, reach for the jug, you can do it!" etc. Now I feel guilty about not talking him out of it.

Obviously a leader needs to take responsiblity for his/her own choices while on the sharp end, but I'm curious to hear from people who've talked someone into climbing something that lead to an epic or injury? Did you feel guilty about it?
