Stoked that I went climbing with Mikl at The Gib today. I have been meaning to get back there for years.
It's a weird kind of cliff. From the base it is very hard to work out what is above you. It seems to alternate between steep and slabby with strange angles everywhere. The rock is Trachyte. From a distance it looks like granite. Once on it, you realise it is a lot more fine grained and slippery than granite but has these little incut crimps that are really quite solid.
Unfortunately, the jug that I grabbed near the top of the first pitch wasn't as solid as the little crimps and I took a slab splashing fall after it came off in my hand. The result was two very bruised ankles ( only, I hope! ). This made following the second pitch (which was excellent) a tad painful.
The walk back to my van was painful too, as was the drive home. I am now walking around like a very pissed off little old man.
Anyway, besides the ankles I had a pretty good day and, as I write this, the Nurofen Plus and Chivas Regal is beginning to kick in.
Soon I'm going to be cruising .

The test will be staggering to the loo tomorrow morning, They looked very painful and you made many shouts of either climbing pleasure or ankle displeasure on the second pitch.

Enjoy! You'll finally see the positive side of why you moved to the far side of the world! Take a walk around Summer Day Valley (good beginner and intermediate trad) and up into Hollow Mtn cave ('ard bouldering), and take in the view of Taipan Wall!

I've seen a Kangaroo! Whoop whoop -I was beginning to think they didn't exist and that I was more likely to see a drop bear! -did spent 2hrs driving around the bush looking for him though. He was cute -and yes he was defo a boy.

yeah was looking at that bit on the guide on here. I'm not much of a boulderer but my stuff still not arrived from UK so only have the ultimate basics so gonna learn. also going with non climbers. Also looking at a walk -best in Grampians - through some caves? that is "almost worth roping up for" Just hope my boots dry out after my dunking canoeing last saturday... x

It's brilliant!
Haha, I didn't, but one of our group caught the train down. Stupidly expensive.
Traversing across Crib Goch was pretty amazing. Crazy Ridge.
all in the name of product testing!

A good half day walk (with a bit of scrambling) to get your bearings on all the good climbing is to start at the Flat Rock carpark and follow tourist track up flat rock, down the other side and scramble up to the base of Taipan Wall, walk right along this past Spurt Wall and keep going right (past Between the Sheeps bouldering cave) and join up to the summit tourist track to Mt Stapylton. Scramble to the summit then head north along the top of Mt Stapylton to tricky scramble down to Hollow Mtn area (cool caves) then reconnect back to tourist which goes back to Hollow Mtn Carpark. Just before the car is Summerday valley which is a good side trip.

I just realized my location for Taipan Wall is wrong - its directly left of Stapylton Summit tag. (south of the marked position). Let me know if you are interested and i'll do up a proper map.
