There has been a previous discussion about this (was it Jonathan Clearwater trying to get people interested in poo tubes?). Great idea, but there is no solution yet as to where to lodge the bags. Schemes like these were compulsory in high use areas in the USA like mt whitney and handy poo bags were distributed when you got your permit and bear canister....
A toilet in the car park would help reduce the magnitude of the problem but it would be interesting to know how that might cost

This is either your vision or memory impairment SImey. I'll take photos for you if you like. Kate F can confirm the delightfully placed one at the base of Astral Plane for starters. Whole lotta space down hill with dirt to dig in. No, lets go up into this narrow gully, poo at the base of a route and put a rock on it.
Maybe you don't pee enough at the crag to see where it all is. Seriously, go to any popular bit of cliff and walk around behind a few bushes and rocks at the base of the cliff. Squeakeasy area will do. Or base of watchtower. Quite a lot of it appears to be just toilet paper, which makes me think there are a bunch of women who wipe and dump because I don't know that too many men who wipe their willy.

Do you think that fuching matters to them? They just want to see climbers as shit heads.

A fair few of parks staff actually climb and even among those that don't there are plenty who have good relationships with climbers. Not sure if you are aware but work by Climbers in Barrenjoey actually just won a Landcare award. Funnily enough, relationships there are really quite good at the moment. So relationships can change, but it is up to us too.
As for the specific issue at Shipley. Those in the know, will know that money was offered by climbers to build a toilet there, and the offer stands (hopefully we can get some progress on that). Likewise climbers last weekend went and actually cleaned up the area (and built tracks etc as well). There are some issues, but I think you can see clear positive engagement from climbers to work through them.
There are some really good relationships around. I think if we all get behind them, we can make some real change. There is certainly room for more participation in these activities (many more people were climbing than helping).

Regarding the Shipley/Glen area, a lot of money ($thousands by now) has been raised by the Crag Care group in the last few years with the intention of funding an eco toilet there. The money is held in trust by the Sydney Rockclimbing Club, who have undertaken to match it from their Access Fund. I believe that the dunny manufacturer was willing to supply it at a knock down price. Not sure where the plans are at.
But the money is only one part of it. You can't just go and plonk a shithouse at the end of someone's street. I think that selling the idea to residents will be the hard part.

Haven't they done that already? Just lacks a bowl and walls.

A friend of mine who climbs "real mountains" swears by those gatorade tubs with the big open tops. Easy to fit it all in without any mess and then it screws shut nice and tight, no smell escaping.
As a parent who regularly carts around wrapped up poo parcels - I don't get why people are so thingy about it.
You happily climb grimy chalked up holds after some climber who just took a dump - think they found a tap & soap in the bush?

You're not going to solve the Shipley/Glen poo problem by making people crap in tubes. I'd treat it as a popular beach or park. You wouldn't expect the tourists at Bondi or Wentworth Falls to crap in tubes.

You could almost sell people on disposable wag bags I reckon, if you had an easily available dispenser and bin.

Better to sell them nappies. Most 5 year olds can hold on for a day till they get home.

Heard that CragCare had raised enough money for the toilet and that the application was with Council. I wrote to Council in support of the application and got the following response: "There is no doubt this area is in need of a replacement toilet and we will endeavour to have the project approved/completed as soon as possible."
There will still be plenty of crags without toilets, so climbers still need to become better toilet trained.

Haha if only...
Was an infants school maths tutor for a while.
But not having the same Godlike omniscient observations as yourself I concede you will invariably know better.

Is there an Australian version of this mob?
http://cleantrails.org/
I like their idea of 'Adopt a Trail' where individual trails get a selection of volunteers that regularly clean up a specific area.
Maybe something similar could be done with crags?
Cleancrags.org?
If you've got a few favourite crags then you could put yourself down as a regular for someone that handles those areas etc...
