Actually I didn't have a serial number, but I had emailed the police a list of features that would help identify the bike such as replaced parts and I also provided them with a photo of the bike I had taken shortly after buying. However they didn't check whether my identification was genuine, in theory I could have told them anything ....

The guy got busted for dealing with stolen goods, they actually found my bike because they had been after him for another bike theft already and somehow his wallet ended up at Richmond Police station (not sure how that happened) where they found the docket of the cash converter deal and followed it up - pretty lucky I'd say ...
