If I bought a pack for this purpose I'd also go for the 40l range. Not bigger though. I rather let one person carry the rope in a rope bag and take all the gear/food in one backpack.

The Macpac Traverse 35l is pretty cool

very sturdy canvas, simple, bigger than 35l sounds. Should be big enough for a rope and a sport rack.

Not sure whether the Lowe comes with a sheet for the rope, if not then definitely the MH.
