you will probably wear out your first pair of shoes before you climb hard enough for it to really matter. just make sure they fit well.

for cheap shoes, go with madrocks provided they fit your foot shape.
One thing to note: DON'T liston to the storeperson who tells you that your shoes need to be insanely tight to the point where you can't walk. go with something that you can stand and walk around in but tight enough such that they won't slip around.

go to some stores and try some shoes on. they will often have bargain bins. if they don't fit or hurt. don't buy them.

Seriously, when you start climbing, even if you try really hard to climb carefully, you will probably blow the toes out in no time. So spending a lot of money and time choosing won't necessarily provide long term returns.
I would recommend lace ups, and not too agressive (pointy, curved toes etc). Lace ups provide more flexibility in terms of expanding/tightening the fit to ensure comfort.

It looks like you're in Bendigo, so give Rock Hardware a go.
See link roughly

If you tell the salesperson you are after a beginner shoe they'll show you their range.. try on the ones in your budget, repeat for as many stores as you can be bothered and then go with the one that feels right. As the other guys said, they shouldn't hurt but they should be very snug and not have spaces where your foot will slide into.

I just bought a pair of the thunder from Rock hardware, they are awsome shoes - the new scarpa rubber is choice.
five ten is also good, but make sure you get a pair with the old stealth rubber - not the new one(the rubber on the new 5.10 is too sticky and doesnt last that long)
but I also agree that as a new climber, you will wear out your first shoes really fast, and maybe going for the most expensive brands and the most technical shoe first off isnt a good idea.
