just use an ATC which has a high friction side. I bought the black diamond ATCXP for my wife. It has a groove on one side for extra friction and she is a lot more confident in using this for belaying a leader. Using the high friction side with a 10.5mm rope makes the belay device lock up with a lot less force required by the brake hand and big falls are a lot easier to hold. Its also a lot less strenuous to hold locked off while someone is dogging a route.
