Don't know much about K100 - but having image stabilisation built in sounds good. Worth considering what lens you will get with it, and what you might like to upgrade to when you get sick of the basic kit lens. When you buy into a brand it can be expensive to change out of it once you've got a collection of lenses, so have a look around. Prob a good camera though.

Have you considered a 'prosumer' like the panasonic lumix FZ50? they're under $1000, 10mp, have a supposedly v. good 35mm-400mm equiv 2.8-3.5 lens. I've heard good things about these. Downside is that it doens't go any wider than 35mm equiv - that's the reason I didn't get one. But if you're not fussed about that it might be worth looking at.
