Empty aerosols & gas cannisters can go in your recycling bin http://recyclingnearyou.com.au/aerosols They'll either be made of steel or aluminium, just like drink & food cans. The content isn't particularly explosive at room temp - but can be a bit dangerous if full (both in a waste compactor or a recycling processor) as it can explode under pressure, flinging baked beans or butane gas out at workers - so make sure you empty it. The above recommendation for emptying is good. I doubt if you were to pop a hole in it that it would do any harm - I'm sure Mikl would have tried it?
