I find it pays to go into several stores, in Sydney we have 7 stores within 200m. Ask what they recommend and why, and just start building up your knowledge from there. When I first became involved in "outdoor" activities, my brother-in-law said listen to what everyone says, analyse it and believe about 5%. It also pays to spend the time shopping, tring gear on, trying more gear on and then going back and trying on all the stuff you thought felt right the first time, before buying anything. I suppose, I'm painfull for the sales people, but they are there to help me make an informed decision, in the end each store makes their sales from me, based upon their range and the quality of their staff.
