Im looking for a new sleeping bag to replace my old 500 gram fill Macpac. Im interested to hear what other people are using.
Ive already got a massive bag 900 gram I used in AK last year but I'm looking for something for quick trips bivying in NZ/Euro
Cheers

I use a Marmot Helium 15F (so -9C) bag, it does the job perfectly. Have used it to bivy in Wye Creek ice cave in July and was perfectly comfortable. Campsaver have it for US$320 atm with free shipping to Aus for purchases over $400, so chuck in a few other bits of gear and you're laughing....

Ha, you yunguns crack me up. Ye ar only usta these newfangled cardbord thingies.
Our pop usta get us up at 2 in tha mornin to pick bullrushes to weave tha box out of them first!
Nex thin you will be tellin me how cold it is bivyin in the alpine.
Pfft. Ye oughta try sleepin in a soggy woven box in tha middle of tha road in winta som time, as tha is how they got teir name. They usta went ard an cold in tha frosty morns, an tha term ard-cold ventually got corruptd (as mos thins do by tha yunguns), to ccardbord!*
(*note tha wa spoke with cccccold induced shivrin).
;-)
Post edit:
How'd you and Macca go for your winter Ozymandias sojourn? Will we see a trip report some time?
I thought you were right with your earlier prediction of the weather being "right feral" for the planned ascent, ... and this confirmed by the weather I experienced down below while wondering how it was going for you.

I never heard a yay/nay from Macca about last Monday/Tuesday so I presumed it was a nay. It will have to wait till I return from climbing elsewhere. Hopefully we can squeeze it in at the end of the season.

G'day Brendan (thread hijack over),
As you know I am not into Alpine Climbing, though I do like sleeping warm (when appropriate), when bivvying☺.
Have you considered the versatility of using two lighter-style bags as a dual-system?
~> I was lucky enough to obtain a 2nd hand Macpac super-lightweight bag off this site, that was designed for use as a dual-bag system, and have found it excellent for my motorcycling (lightweight by necessity), trips.
It is good as a stand alone summer bag, and adds warmth to my old winter bag when winter bivvying.
I am guessing my winter total load is still similar, due probable loss of loft in the winter bag over the years, and the newer dual-bag is not much bigger/heavier than a silk inner-sheet when packed / & is certainly smaller/lighter than my Exped mat when packed.

Skatepark? Summer? Try a 100m cliff in winter . . .
Yeah couldn't organise the Mon/Tues option, bit short notice to organise ... unfortunately
Did it actually end up being 'good' conditions . .. Damn . Will have to hope for something similar later in the season . .. .
Re Bags. A few ideas rather than actual product recommendation
Liner bags for added warmth with little weight, internal silk, fleece or even a vapour barrier..
External liners - bivi-bag or weather-proof over-bag for lighter bag.
Half-bag - Either traditional half length to be used with down jacket
or the newer half-fill where only the top half of the bag has fill and you rely on your mat for insulation underneath, or use in a dual bag system
I got a 650 loft down bag that has a removable panel on the front that adds several degrees comfort to a -10ish bag....
Buying a new bag I would want to go with something that has a good wind and waterproof external so your warmth doesn't get blown away, work out the weight/size that you are after and then add clothes or liners etc to reach necessary warmth. Lots of variants here. Don't forget warm socks....

Yeh, widewetandslippery would agree with that, but likely for different reasons.

Can highly recommend the Exped Waterbloc range. I've got an 800 large (750gm of 840 loft goose down). Not super light (large bag is 1450gms) however as they're seam sealed and waterproof, you can go without a bivy. Sizings run small so if you're around 5'10" you'll want a large. Awesome quality as with all the Exped stuff i've used. They also do a 600 bag that comes in at 1150gms.

I use marmot bags plasma series, the -1 I've used summer and winter huts, bivied cold condits, nz with bivy bag in nz, all fine, used the +4 summer and winter huts and summer bivy. I sleep cold if I was counting grams I'd go the +4 at 570g I think and if versatility, the -1 I often have to unzip this bag - too warm. The bag is long and quite wide ie comfortable for a restless sleeper or large person

I use a Mtn Hardware 750 bag which is rated to -18C (whatever that means) and has kept me warm sleeping on glaciers in a Canadian winter (-20C I think it got to). it has an Epic outer shell and a dual zip system whereby you can increase or decrease the room inside the bag to make it cooler or warmer, they don't make it anymore but this bag would be the equivalent http://www.mountainhardwear.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-MountainHardwear_US-Site/default/mProduct-Show?pid=OU8482&start=12

I use a Macpac Pinnacle. They don't make it any more, but it is 150gm of fill in one of those bags with fill only on top and a sleeve for the sleeping mat underneath. For NZ hut based climbing it is very effective and light to carry on walk outs. For high bivvies it is a bit chilly but would be fine if you wore a decent jacket & some tights and it still doesn't weigh very much.
I had it totally re-filled last year because they don't make them anymore. If I had to buy again I would look at one of the liner bag systems designed to bulk up three season bags. The MontBell equipment I have seen has seemed a very good value for money and space/weight conscious option. I think Glenn Pennycook is still distributing their gear.

You could always go Guy McKinnon style.
Bivvy bag and puffy-parka, and sit on your backpack till morning...
