I gather this is fairly simple just drill a hole on each side if the rung for the rope and hang it up....just wondering if the dowel is something you can easily get at Bunnings.

I made one with a group of kids about 15yrs ago for a rockgym we use. Got Mt Ash dowel at Bunnings, drilled holes at ends, 6mm cord, overhand knots, pulled tight off car bumper in driveway. Still going strong. Used the Mt. Ash because it was in a commercial gym, but overkill for home. Made one many, many years ago out of pvc drainpipe and an old climbing rope.

Good for killing your elbows! But anything Bachar came up with has to be cool. Try to avoid drinking with groups of climbers near it, although that can be entertaining, too!

Is there a good range of dowel available at the big B? I imagine you would want something fairly wide, not skinny broom handle stuff.

I made one once using bush timber, and just clove hitched around the ends of the rungs. Once everythig tightens up, its fine

Yeah, the time-warp that is Bunnings stocks a big range of dowel, I used some really wide stuff, maybe 2inches, if you want to go flash. It was expensive, though.
I'd use cheaper rubbish stuff for home.
No I wouldn't! My elbows flare at the thought of it! Great sandbag at pissups, though.

Fck the bachar ladder - go for rope climbing. Way easier to set up and no fking about with rungs and shit.

If you can get your hands on a fat rope easy, thinner rope works fine too if multiple strands are used with an overhand knot every foot or two (ie rung width apart).

Now you're talking Eddie, the blown elbows weren't enough - now you want to burn my tender little pinkies, too! John Gill would be proud of you.
Might say something about the demographic on here that the only training methods being proposed are decades old!
You'll need some of those big round rocks to carry around, too. And don't forget the handlebar moustache!

I've made one and am making one now. I tied an 8 in the middle of an old rope and started from there. I made maybe the first 10 rungs narrower, only about two hands wide. The rest was about a hand wider. I used 1 1/8" 6060T6 portaledge aluminium and wrapped it in tape. Make sure your knots are really set in position; I used simple overhands. The use of climbing rope is appropriate because you're going to be winching it tight at the angle you want. Need to track down some appropriate rungs, doubt big B's will have it...

I've made one as well. Dowel and rope from hardware store. Drilled holes, rungs are about 450mm in length, chose a kernmantle rope for extra safety. Can't remember how much all up but the thing lasted about six years in all weather before the rungs deteriorated. I should make another one.

Yeah Max,

the one I made from pvc drainpipe, v. cheap, worked well and lasted years, long enough to injure quite a few friends! :-)
