The Xtrail is a good choice or the earlier Honda CRV. (the picnic table model) Although most of the tables have disappeared from the car.
The Sextrail has awd when needed and is front wheel drive for around town,unlike the Scooby doo which is constant AWD. It is big enough to sleep in the back( i am sixtwo in old speak). The car s interior is all plasticky which means easier to clean when you drop your milkshake on the road into the Wolgan.
Ground clearance is not in the same league as a proper 4wd but good enough in the sorts of conditions you are likely to find on the way to the crag. A proper forby might look the part but realistically how often are you going to use low range? And around Sydney the places you really need low range you will need a lift kit ,diff locks a mate with another 4wd and recovery gear.
