I started climbing in the days before 'removable protection' was available/used in Australia and so Ewbank Crackers were a tremendous breakthrough. Subsequently we saw Hexes (and in particular Hexentrics) arrive here and I obtained a considerable quantity, complemented by Stoppers for the smaller placements.

Nowadays I still carry Stoppers (and similar nuts) but rarely add a Hex to my rack, reserving the Number 11 for specific situations on specific climbs such as:-

The second pitch of Ejaculation at Arapiles, at the top of the widening vertical crack before it arches over leftwards into the corner. The #11 drops in here beautifully and is bomber.

Likewise on Hermes (Booroomba) at the start of the traverse rightwards out under the roof.

And, believe it or not, on Yorkshire Crack (1st pitch Eternity) at Mt Piddington, Blue Mtns, there's a bombproof placement for an 11 Hex that, if all your lower protection pulls, will stop you hitting the ground.

I'm sure many on Chockstone will be able to describe heaps of other situations where a Hex is invaluable.
