IMO insteps are great for the majority of circumstances here in Oz, but I still always take my G10s, they're onbviously heavier than insteps but lighter than most 12 pointers like BD Sabretooths or my G14s which are brilliant on steep ice, but after a day out are like having weights strapped to your boots.

My G10s are great and have gotten me out of the poo a number of times here and OS. I also take a single 55cm axe (CM Aztar currently, previously the Axar) with an adze, not too heavy but doesn't get in the way like a proper walking axe when skiing / boarding and I can still self arrest with it easily enough.

I haven't been in the game for a few years but if I was in the market for new pointy bits I'd personally be looking at the Grivel Race or Airtechs, they're in the weight weenie region and will do the trick nicely for tele or AT boots. Prob telling you what you already know but definately avoid anything with vertical frontpoints as they lack float in snow and can be annoying when walking and even become dangerous in softer steep snow.

Have you looked at ski crampons? I've not had any experience with them personally but mates OS use them and swear by them.
