Part of the problem people may be experiencing with not being able to seal the cores of the ropes, may relate to the use of spectra or dyneema instead of nylon for the core. These UHMW and LLD polyethylene fibres tend not to melt easily. The solution I've found for the cores poking through and then fraying is to cut the core (ideally with a hot knife so some melting occurs) about 10mm shorter than the outer sheath, then melt the sheath over the end of the core. Although ideally done with a hot knife, you can achieve the same results with a lighter. To clean up the ends, wet your fingers with saliva and use your fingers, while the nylon is still molten.

A few other ways prevent the end of the rope from fraying includes heat shink tubing, which also allows you to put a label the rope. Or the very old technique of using a thread and wrap this around the end.
