its still miserable, but at least theres some value in it. the best reason for synthetic is how well it can dry things out, ie socks/gloves sweaty close to skin layers etc. it will help the whole wicking process and theres some good tricks to get things to dry faster. the best is a hot water bottle (nalgene) in your jacket(thats why Patagonia's DAS Parka has epicly big inside pockets). obviously this is for at bivys etc not climbing.

so no they wont ever replace soft shells but make awesome belay jackets and a good combo with a nice softshell. if your into the winter/big-wall/adventure stuff i couldnt recommend them more over down!!!
