Hello knowledgeable chockstone users.

Does anyone know what material the spring in your standard aluminium screw gate carabiner is made out of?

I need to know if there are any ferrous metallic components in an aluminium biner.

Cheers

some biners have stainless gate pins and some have ferritic pins. Some springs are ferritic. Most wiregates seem to be stainless. You can check with a magnet (ferritic will attract a magnet)

Yeah thats why I want to know if they are ferritic. I'm building a rig to go in a MRI machine and I was thinking of attaching a biner to the rig. So I need to be sure that it will not be affected by the powerful magnet in the MRI.

I believe even stainless can be an issue in those sorts of fields.

Mostl they are stainless as are the pins but this doesn´t help much as the usual spring grades are magnetic, apart from a few very specialised alloys stainless steels all become magnetic from the heat treatment or from cold working.

There is a company which makes plastic mallions, I saw one a few years ago, rated to 80kg breaking strength. not sure who makes them.
