I still have an original Joe Brown helmet, which apart from being huge, weighing several Kgs and having no ventilation is still servicable (except in the fashion stakes). It has about 2cm of closed cell foam as the lining and a fibreglass shell that any respectable kayak would be happy to be made from.

I've also broken 2 cycling helmets. The second of them broke and I hadn't realised that my head had hit the ground until I got home and noticed that the foam had cracked. And that is what the foam in modern bike helmets is designed to do, cushion the impact
