I have replied to another posting re. booty or stealing by finding. I agree that if it is left behind and the original owner appears to have abandoned the piece then i believe it is booty. I posted somewhere else what the law might think but if it is i believe if it is stuck and appears to have been left behind then finders keepers. Although if someone has just bailed on a route and intends on coming back then the moral (and legal position) is make an attempt to find the owner. Although i dont know how you would know whether it was abandoned or not.
Realistically i reckon if the only criminal act you ever commit is hanging onto to some climbing booty then thats not so bad. One of the dilemas is what constitutes booty. I found a cam in a climb that had been left for dead (i think) and i snaffled it. However i also found a camera at the base of the crag and didnt consider knocking it off. I did know the owner of the camera and not the cam so that swayed my decision but i would never consider the camera as booty but cams well ........
