Yes you can, but you can make more measured gains by training specifics in a controlled environmant to gain the most out of your time. You could argue that training with the variables of outdoor climbing around you is the way to do it but that tends to come under technique rather than pure strength.

Then don't chastise the people who prefer to take a 'scientific' approach to improve their climbing. As much as specific training helps the top end of climbers it also helps the lower grade climbers as well. :-)))
