I thought that subies were generally pretty bullet proof however that can be a bit of a myth.The early ones might have been i have had 2 of them and they were bulletproof. I discovered the hard way that many (around20%) of the 2.5ltr cars are prone to head gasket failure. Replacement engines run around $2500-3000. The EJ35 engine was fitted to Forester and Outbacks. Do you homework before buying one and dont rely on the myth that they are as good as they used to be. Dont rule out the other soft roaders as they can be better value as used Subies tend to come with high kms. From left field the Mazda Tribute/ Ford Escape not as popular but still reliable cars with cragging ability. Good luck with it.
