From Petzl website: A multipurpose 3-in-1 device (pulley, self-jamming pulley, rope clamp / grab) for hauling a sack, raising a person, setting up a hauling system or selfbelaying.
I've no experience with this device, though have been guilty of TR self belay with a GriGri. Were I to use the Mini Traxion, at least the manufacturer seems to suggest it's suitable (see above) for this purpose, but I'd still want to think about things like:
- How sharp are it's teeth? Will it shread my rope sheath if I take a fall?
- Flipping upside down during a fall, will it still lock?
- What happens if I allow slack to develop and take a fall on it?
- Biner orientation, can it load the gate?
- Getting down. How to move from climbing to abseil. (At least with the GriGri this is trival).
- Getting up over crux sections. How to switch to asending the rope. ie, carry at least one prusik or another ascending device.
- Some form of back up in case it all goes wrong. Tying knots below you in the slack rope, or better yet, having a second rope you can tie off to at intervals.
Again, I've very little experience with this. (Probably just enough to get into trouble). Suggest you look at other's experiences with self belay:
How do I top-rop self-belay?
