I believe that he said that he was experienced. At least he remembered the high-visibility vest, the one essential piece of equipment for the great outdoors.

If only he'd shown Clinton / Barry's nous and come on to Chockstone to ask advice. 'I plan to do a 30m rappel. How much rope should I take? Anything else I should take along just in case? And if I need to just hang there for a bit, are there any other options than just death-gripping the rope waiting for SAR to arrive?' Though he might've got a whole range of different answers. I don't want to say that some people are too dumb to live. So I won't.

Yea this is bizarre. Miscalculation is one thing and easy enough to do but not knowing options for getting back up or even locking off for an extended period of time is just weird.

A more experienced climber would have just rapped off the end of his rope (eg Zac, Ado and the other level 43 wizard at Buffalo the other day).

It was also a good thing that the paramedic had his trusty 'Yates knife' to cut the absqueiler's ropes free...
~> though it wouldn't have worked for rescueing this lass...

Absolutely! Abseiling is far more extreme. Climbing is just indoors on those coloured bumps
