Whilst climbing Hadrian (16) at Werribee Gorge last Sunday with Steve (which is also my all time favourite day trip destination* from Melbourne), I got a real shock half way up, just a tad below a finger jam, when I noticed something moving in the crack in the form of a curled up reptile wiggling around. I thought "SH#T!!... it's a god damn snake..." and I quicky down climbed. After climbing back up again and placing some pro "just in case", the "thiiiiiing" which kept wiggling around (trying not to freeze its nuts off no noubt!....yep it was a terrible day, no one there except us) appeared to have a very small leg thing sticking out of it's coiled body, so possibly a large lizard we think.
MORAL OF THE STORY: Take care when placing fingers in cracks as doing so in the wrong crack can mean you can have your fingers bitten off!
* Can there be a better place within 45 mins of Melbourne then our own Werribee Gorge?....yes...yes.. I know, plus the new 25 minute hard walk in....but.... where can you get over 40 climbs, Grade 10 to 26, where you can utilise your crack, face, side pulling, and finger pocket climbing skills in one day trip location with lots of loose rocks on top....and on slippery rock.....which means if you can climb there then you can climb anywhere!...ahhhh......where esle but Werribee.....
