The story goes that he's soloing at Thorn, comes off, breaks both ankles and starts crawling (a lot of blackberries over there in those days). I think a track went steeply straight down to the main creek back then, but if it went where it does now he would have negotiated a boulder field, dropped steeply down to a side creek, down that and across the main creek, along the tourist track then up the Far Crag descent gully and from there another km or so to the road. That's a pretty good effort.
