Sounds like a ganglion or cyst to me. They're virtually the same thing.
IF that's what it is, hitting it with a big black bible OR the Arapiles and Grampians selected guide books together is the solution. No doctor will ever tell you that on the record. After hours however is a different story.
You can have them drained then injected with cortezone (Not a sponsored speller), but this can be nasty, and doesn't necessarily 'kill it' or stop it coming back.
Surgery is possible too, but the resultant scar tissue, etc can likely be worse than the little blighter in the first place.

Julian Saunders is one of the best resources for this.
I've also been referred to an apparently excellent hand specialist at the Alfred hospital. I'll pass his details on if interested when i get them.
