Just as the new route with jumbo size inch thick tick marks all the way up it along with gold coloured hardware dynas does not do the icon justice nor does this flic of a chick toproping from halfway using fixed tyrolean do justice to what ought to be an adventure.

In stark contrast to the film of the Candle stick I reposted from thesarvo.

Maybe not stark contrast, but no country/blues/rock originals to go with it.

ABC had an angle on it that they thought would appeal to a broad audience. Of course, I would have made it way different.Considering it was made by non-climbers for non-climbers, it was a decent portrayal.Do you really think that Australia thought "wow they really sucked the adventure out of the Totem Pole"? Did ABC do the Totem Pole an injustice? Are you serious?
Also about "top roping" half the tote. Are you bitching because she did not lead both pitches? That is beyond petty. Also, the tyrolean was put in place to facilitate the video and was used by the camera guys to get to the tote quickly for filming.(how the f else were we suppose to do this?)
Garry has climbed the thing a dozen times. Libby has already climbed it. Everyone involved has climbed the tote before. The whole thing was staged for the ABC... DUH! And anyway what part of the "adventure" was removed by the tyrolean? The swing across from the mainland? This is totally easy now that the carrots were replaced(obviously not by us). Dude, you seem to be grasping at any pathetic reason to slam this video just to be negative. Is it personal or are you simply cynical in nature?
Also if you don't like Garry's new route, tell HIM about it. It had absolutely nothing to do with us filming gaz and libby climb the free route. It's like your just finding any kind of poison to inject.
And as far as not being like the Candlestick video from the 70's. First off it is not the Candelstick. There is no swimming to get to the Totem Pole. It is way less epic. Second, they had a 30 minute program on prime time with a MASSIVE budget, helicopters etc. They had tea at the Mayor's house! We had 5 minutes and a $0 budget.
What I find really disappointing is the negativity or complacency that continues to pour out of this ever more cliquey and irrelevant website. Climbing in Tasmania gets national news coverage(probably a first in years about any sort of rock climbing on national news) and the only two people to comment are hate filled cynics.
I am not really surprised by this chockstoners! This is why I don't post any more Tassie news on your "climbing" website.

I'm disappointed you've come to this conclusion. Frankly the more climbing news that gets posted here the better, regardless of whether it leads to quality discussion, confrontational debate or just campfire banter.
I really enjoyed the video and was impressed by the quality of the reporting which was in stark contrast to that of the dawn wall write ups which were littered with rubbish. As for the production, it certainly makes more sense retrospectively knowing that Libby had already climbed the route and I had wondered that same thing about the traverse and the toprope. Of course if the only information we are given is what's shown then that's how it will be judged so I wouldn't dive into the other posters too heavily considering this.
A good video nonetheless and all involved should be pleased with being able to get something out there for the general public. Props especially for your comment that you're not alive if you don't get excited by being out there. Couldn't have said it better.

Sorry cobber if you took my comments the wrong way, I wasn't saying it in a bad way, I'd just watched the Candlestick film and was in thrall of the retro ness of the production compared to modern efforts, not knocking the current effort. The fact that the modern film looks so good with a $0 budget is a testament to how far film/video technology has come (probably also how far the ABC budget has dropped), but listening to the way the climbers in both films were talking, how similar the love of the spot and motivations are.
I'm sorry you missed out at tea at the mayors house, it is probably rubbish now anyway.

So negativity , complacency and overwhelming hatred , toxic poisonous mindset aside I respect you John , you are friendly and encouraging. Im not. Its true, non climbing Australian dont give a rats but I thought it was a tad lame, considering your both strong climbers. So we disagree. As for my issues with the hardware on the new pioneered route maybe my eyes were deceiving me and it was infact good stainless that will last as has been used on the free route. Cant wait to see the tassie film. Please dont beat me up if your on the North Island. I dont like getting hurt.

U will have to stand in line Johnny, tho with a Raps hammer you should trump timtam who has called on 1st beating.
Let Ed know B4 you do it, as he thinks it's a good climb controversy plot for his film in this years Goatfest entry, and being cheap he won't have to pay up for false blood makeup.

Good one Johnny. I originally only caught the last half of it on the 7:30 report so wasn't clear what the story was until I watched the whole thing through the link here.
Hope your film project goes well.

Thanks for the kind words. I guess I am a bit of a new age sensitive seppo sometimes. I don't mind honest criticisms even if they are harsh. I actually like them. It just seemed that evan was moving into attack mode for no good reason so I retaliated. It didn't justify me lashing out at the whole website.
That said, some of you may be happy to know that Simon Madden from Vertical Life came down to Hobart and clobbered me with a mallet. This hammering was much worse than the first one I got from those limp wristed fat old pommies in the Pines. Im currently barely able to type this message after the pummeling I received. We got the whole thing on video and will be posting it soon.
cheers!
