Further trivia for those so inclined ....
I checked the Mt Buffalo ‘Intentions Book’ yesterday 24/10/04 and also spoke with the Head Ranger regarding any earlier books or records kept by National Parks Vic. of climbs done in the Gorge.
Apparently the present book is all they have on record, though my dimming memory from a few years back recalls that the present Intentions Book had an earlier version which was kept adjacent / in? the Rangers Office.
Anyway here are the STATISTICS.
* The present Intentions Book spans period 21-04-03 to 24-10-04
*There are 20 entries of climbs done (or attempted) on the North Wall during that period, plus two entries for the South Side (Where Angels Fear To Tread).
* I am personally aware that at least 3 of those attempts resulted in retreat; so this equates with approximately one ascent per month for the Nth Wall in the past 18 months.
*The breakdown of Nth Wall climbs is;~
11 Ozy Direct
4 Ozy (version not specified).
1 Ozy Original
2 Lord Gumtree / Holden Caulfield
1 Fuhrer
1 North Wall (unspecified).
*Interestingly the times taken for the above climbs breakdown as;~
4 one day ascents
11 two day ascents
2 three day ascents
1 six day ascent
2 (unspecified)
*Of the 20 teams;~
3 consisted of 3 people.
2 were solo
15 consisted of 2 people
* The monthly breakdown is;~
Jan 3
Feb 1
Apr 4
May 1
Jul 1
Oct 2
Nov 1
Dec 7
*Climbers attended from as far afield as Brisbane to undertake the adventure.
IMO the above statistics probably do not include the undertakings of certain elite climbers (HB, Steve Monks et al), so the ‘real number’ of ascents is possibly higher.
