My mates and I went for a walk from Buandik on the weekend (mon when it was bucketing down) in search of the Gallery. We found loads of awesome boulders but couldn't actually find the crag.

In the Mentz/Tempest guide the track is shown to turn left (or West) at the top of the hill after a flat spot. We found that the cairned track turned right! Did we take the wrong track up the hill? We turned left at a sign post to the Aboriginal Rock Art, near the bottom of the hill, as marked in the guide.

Are you supposed to leave the cairned track? Is the crag over the other side of the hill?

Any tips on how close we got?

You were very close. Keep walking up the hill past the boulders, this is where the guidebook helpfully points out that you will get lost without giving any hints as to how to get found. It envokes images in my mind of simon throwing up his hands in dismissal and wandering off to the pub.
The gallery is kinda just over the hill past the boulders. The cairns should lead you there. there is a bit of a flat rock slab at the top near the spectacular canyon slot that is not mentioned in the guidebook. It is easy to walk past it for some reason. walk through it and you are there. Persevere, It is there and it is steep and hilariously fun!

Thansk to Josepf for the Topos via email.

We followed the cairns but they seemed to lead us back down the hill toward the Aboriginal Shelter.

More clues should put me right next time...

The main problem is the official climbers walking track to the gallery is actually a new track - built AFTER the Tempest/Mentz guide (published in the 90s). Cross the bridge, take the left turn, walk up the hill for a few hundred metres then take a further left turn onto a smaller track (possibly cairned). Walk to the top of the hill (huf puf) until it goes flat, follow the major track through the thick bush for about 200m until it hits a chossy looking cliff with a canyon. Walk through this canyon and hey presto!
