Crags near Hobart
10:46:56 PM
Heading to Hobart for 5 days in July for a conference. Would prefer just to take some draws for a couple of quick sessions, not a rack. Is there anything like Hillwood within an hour's drive of Hobart? I think the real Hillwood is north of Launceston, that's a bit too far.

All the old local quarries are bolted to the sh#thouse. All have some fun routes and are overgraded in MO. There is 3-4 of them all within 10 minutes of Hobart CDB. Always busy too.

Looks like this-

More info at,

Or take a couple of sets of nuts and head up the Organ Pipes.

It's true, imagine how popular Werribee would be if it was an hour closer to Melbourne ...

Arapiles is about the right distance away from Melbourne, it's far enough to exclude people who aren't prepared to make some sort of commitment, but not too far to annoy the semi-keen.

I reckon Freuhauf is a great little training crag 2 mins drive from the centre of Hobart, 30 second walk from the car park what more could you want - top rope or sport. Proctors Rd quarry is ok as well but access is difficult now and probably not worth the effort and waterworks quarry is ok - park and walk 10 metres.

Its been 15 years since I lived there but none of the crags, besides the quarries, are full sport crags. Having said that there are some sport routes at mt wellington, kempton quoin, and gunners quoin -- actually Mad Monkeys might be a sport crag, the walk is longish - but I never climbed there. Oh, there is a sand stone crag up in the hills behind a locked gate maybe around an hours drive???, sport routes there as well - can't remember what it is called. Will look it up tonight

Freuhauf is definetly the pick of the bunch. The photo I posted is waterworks far left side.

Thanks everyone for some inside info. I am also heading down to Tassie but in early Feb to take on some crags. Plan is to venture down to Tassie during the warmer months of the year for climbing - which will probably still be bloody cold for a Top End dweller.

Soft ticks my arse!

I found some of the routes at Freuhauf desperate for the grade. Suck Ethics and Anaphylaxis spring to mind.

Maybe it's just the mainlanders that are soft.
