Hi

I went solo to HaLong this year and did some DWS.

Was great. Be better with friends who are phyched to DWS than looking to meet climbers there. Slopony were good but really not the amazing guys that everyone said they were as I was told just turn up and all good someone will be DWS??? I was the only person climbing there that week everyone else was not there just to climb?

But with a few mate you will be sweet. Get a boat from Slopony (easier than the risk of a rip off) and then hit the high tide. (really is all about high tide, if its low you may miss alot of climbing)
Tips
1. take drinks on the boat but also buy some from the crew
2. line up your trip with the tide
3. they have a guide that is good. I would have gone to more not mapped spots if I was not on my own DWS.
4. the island is crazy during tourist time and if I went again I would just arrive and hop on the boat.
5. easy to get to follow the instructions on slopony
6. thousands of hotels. you get what you pay for. I stayed at a few but ah all much of a muchness
7. the best food was down on the main drag called...... um ..... all I remember was it had a lavazza coffee sign and was dim with couches and tables. spent most of my meals and coffee time there.
8. be assertive with the boat drivers. They can be lazy and we needed to say we want to go to this rock, we want to camp in a quite place not moored to you mates fishing village, we want to go to a quiet pretty place to kayak. I say this we did have a blast drink beer and jumping off the roof till late in the evening with the crew some nights hehehe

The DWS is a blast but the rock is not the cuese or verdon well traveled stuff its sharp in many spots and sometimes lose.

Happy to send you my guide before you go to read through (not that its big)

Happy to talk about it.

Duncan
