What price for unobtainium?

Last Buffalo Aidfest (several years ago now!), I was surprised to learn from one of the well geared up slackliners who attended, that my Silent Partner was worth a small fortune due to no longer being manufactured.
I may be wrong but I think he said that he’d heard demand at that time had caused one to sell in USA for about $5,000!!

They are too good to be simply collectors items, and I suspect this one will become well used.

With only 9 hrs remaining on its auction I’m surprised it isn’t sitting at a higher bid… and it makes me wonder if it was also advertised on USA forums.

The one mentioned above, went for just over $3000- with several others around the world selling for over $2500-. Last year they were selling for around $1600-.
I’ve made this a bit of a hobby of mine and this last sale is by far the highest price that I have seen them go for.
I would think a limited run production could be highly lucrative

I’m not sure about highly lucrative as I know nothing of the costs of manufacturing small run, rated gear, but I’d buy one!

Yeah, pretty rich eh, but you’re not a boulderer by any chance are you?
Some people pay more for stuff like getting dragged up Everest, or at a local level spend similar outrageous gear $ for a single night of glamping on a portaledge as charged by adventure companies.

Soloing more easily by using the good gear and making for greater relative safety is a better spend I reckon, especially compared to say the filthy rich blighters joy riding into edge of space recently. Why do they call themselves astronauts when it doesn’t make one a sailor when one rides on a ferry?

If you can't get the experience any other way than by paying for it, and supply is limited, plus you can afford it, then why not?

Your justification for spending money on grossly over-hyped objects or adventures simply because one has loads of money may well apply to someone with limited imagination, little empathy, few social constraints and even fewer friends!

Okay bro climber; I see from your response that you are careful with your monitory resources, have lots of imagination, empathy, social constraints and friends, but I am curious if you also subscribe to the anarchistic nature often exhibited by trad climbers of old.
For example, I doubt that despite having most of those attributes you list, the perpetrator of the Compressor Route on Cerro Torre was concerned with the cost of the bolts, or the compressor he used, to put up that contentious route.

I’m not suggesting that you are contentious, but instead am suggesting it probably isn’t unreasonable for those following a dream to spend the $ required to achieve it.
