Is this because there are more climbers now than then?

Generally i would agree but the current crop will trog in if the climbing is worthwhile. Bowens Creek being an example. And a lot of the stuff in the Grose is not right by the car. So i guess i have just completely contradicted myself and demonstrates that i shouldnt generalise when discussing climbers habits.
