There is always the rush of hitting the deck when your belayer lets go of the rope!!!
The slow go pulleys ( the he %$£* pulley system with the doubled rope) is designed to slow things down for people who don't understand that how much control they actually have, probably the majority of people.
I still get people saying that the belay device is faulty because it runs through the belay device both ways. If the Slow Gos weren't there climbing centres would have to have staffing ratios similiar to the ratios that apply to top rope climbing outdoors. Maybe 1:6 more likely 1:4 instead of the around 1:20 that is the accepted ratio.
Its all a compromise however remember that it is not real climbing it is an artificial environment (hard not forget given that the walls are plywood and the holds brightly coloured) that you pay to enter and the operators owe everyone a Duty Of Care you and the novices.
I agree we have become the "Nanny" Country and the culture that exists in other countries is quite refreshing however after having gone to some climbing centres OS euro bumblies are still bumblies. I dont know how they get away with the lack of supervision and belay induction that exists here.
