Napthalene is fairly safe unless ingested, so contact etc is ok. It certainly can't hurt in snake prevention, as long as you remain sceptical and don't put too much faith in it. My favourite snake situation: Person goes out to feed/check on their rabbit/guinea pig etc, and they just find a snake in the cage. What's happened is the snake fits through the wire, eats the animal, then can't fit out!
