Forecast for western Victoria Friday to Monday is four days of 40+ degrees.
If you are going to climb choose a shady crag and drink plenty of water.
Or go to Mt Buffalo.

Speaking of Mount Buffalo, does anyone else think Parks Vic's booking system over peak periods could use a little work? The current system forces you to book a week at a time but the week runs from Saturday to Saturday so you cannot drive up Friday night as people may have still be in the site you have booked.

In 2006 we fled a series of 42 degree days in Arapiles and headed to Buffalo! (this was the day the catastrophic 2006 fires started in the Gramps). In fact, it is four years to the +\-2 days.
When we arrived at Buffalo we were greeted by 41 degree days (three of them!) and a total fire ban. The only thing that made buffalo any better was Lake Catani.
Buffalo doesn't always guarantee climbing!

The booking system is super annoying.

This weekend is going to be super hot.

I reckon Bundaleer will be more comfy than my house.

I wish there was a swimming hole near there.

Lake Bellfield is pretty good for a dip. If you have a 4WD, don't go to the "standard" car park (which is muddy and involves a 400m walk and log crossing) but turn off the highway closer to Halls Gap. Adventurous 4WD owners can get to the water's edge, normal humans to about 60m. 2WD can probably find a spot near the highway and walk down.

Tis true, Bellfield was looking good last spring. I'd forgotten about all those nearly dry reservoirs we have.

Nah
Trojan Wall on the Ridge has some cool subterranean routes.
and a flatter, shorter walk in!

Bit of a fire risk out there though? Probably no worse than any other crags.

I rang Namadgi NP Visitors Center a few weeks ago and they told me that they close the road up to Orrorrol Ridge and Booroomba now, if there is a total fire ban.

I reckon there is a pretty good chance of a total fire ban this weekend if temperatures reach the predicted high.

I find Black Range bouldering is a good option for really hot days. It seems to be about 5 degrees cooler up there in the forest.

hoping to get to buffalo on sunday, it's usually OK if you make sure you have some shade at the base of whatever you're climbing

40+ at Araps - can't begin to imagine how grim that would be!! Sausage on the barbie grill to be sure. Saw a news report on some bloke evacuated off the crag because of heatstroke. I think I will stick to my Aussie winter climbing trajectory at Araps and other Aussie crag I stumble upon during my depredations.

Surprisingly, there is no total fire ban for Saturday.
Forecast is 41 degrees, enough to fry an egg and boil the solar billy on those Tiger wall belay ledges.

Well, I'm convinced. Bundaleer has it's own personal airconditioning system. After a morning of swimming and a picnic at Bellfield, we wandered up to the crag at 130, climbed all afternoon in deep shade with strong breeze and nary a complaint about the heat at all. We wandered down about 730, camped on Stoney Creek road and even had to put a jumper on about 830. It's heaps cooler there. The only setbacks are the distance from shade to the water at Bellfield and the walk up in the heat. You could always head up early and hang out in the camping cave, or just set up there for a few days. Don't do what 2 other groups did though, and get there in the morning, climb in the sun and end up going home exhausted and heatstruck just as prime climbing time kicks in. You can climb on stuff facing the same direction as Basilisk from about 1230, Geroantian direction about 2.

Parks Vic did wander by the campgrounds to say the park will probably be closed on Monday due to fire conditions.

Just heard on the radio that parks in the wimmera will probably be closed tomorrow because of the conditions and people will be asked to leave. I imagine that people at Arapiles will be advised this afternoon.
