After falling on the first pitch of something at the Cathedrals (it was Sugarloaf and there was very little pro on the first pitch and I had nothing in) and landing hard on my toes, I decide to belay and second the pitch instead of lead to give the pain time to subside. My partner is near the first belay and the pain in my foot is still as strong as ever and I have to call up “Um, I think my toes are broken”.

After downclimbing and packing up we start the long walk back to the car. Some hikers coming the other way ask why I am struggling with the walk down and the broken toes are explained. A kind offer of painkillers is knocked back by my climbing partner with “No, he’s ruined my day off – I only get one a month - he deserves to suffer”.
