My faithful hyundai excel which has been down numerous 4wd tracks in the gramps and elsewhere finally shat itself in a plume of burnt oil and clanking sounds. So, asssuming I'll get a replacement, and will spend less than $5k on the new purhcase, what should I get?

A mate I trust has offered me his ex-government fleet 2000 holden aclaim VTII which has done less than 100,000km (!!!) for $5k, with roadworthy (he's just got a WRX). It sounds like a great buy, easy transaction,i can put a lot of shit in it, but have a few concerns:

(a) holdens have a reputation for being shit cars, requiring regular mechanical work;

(b) it's a BIG car, will chug the fuel.

(c) i hear it has an unprotected sump (cf the hyundai), so i'm likely to knock the bottom off the engine if ever i go offroad. bad

You recommendations please? The other option I'm thinking is picking up a new excel for $3k and driving into the ground.
