Not always. As the grades go up the space bewteen holds tends to go up as well. More efficient in a lot of cases to do a dynamic move than to try and do it static. I know that means usually just one contraction and not repetitive moves like swimming.

As you have said though nothing gets you more fit for climbing than climbing itself. But using other methods like swimming/running/cycling can train your heart and lungs while your 'climbing muscles' are resting. Having a better oxygen delivery system to your body and more importantly your forearms is essential to improving your endurance on the rock.
