I dont think there would be residual stresses from bending in the area where the crack is, it is on a straight bit of stock which hasn't been bent (hence no yielding and no residual stresses). The act of welding might even help to relieve any residual stresses (if there are any) depending on the heat input etc? Definately looks to pass throught the HAZ though. Material can become brittle in the HAZ which could explain why it cracked rather than simply bending around the rocky protrusion? |
