As a noob to climbing (1 year), I have to concur with the most of the previous posts.

We've made the biggest improvements by heading out to Araps/Gramps and getting on the rock. We use the gym to keep our strength and fitness up. And yes, we do dyno in the gym, but we rarely dyno outdoors. Mixing it up with a hard bouldering session every 3-4 weeks has also helped. No courses or anything - we just train, talk, watch and learn.

In our group, we also have a 5-foot-nothing lass who obviously doesn't have the reach that some of us do, but she's pulling nice static moves that we can't do. She's flashing 23/24 on top-rope.

A couple of guys have done the gear placement course out at Araps, which they highly recommend. Save your pennies - get out there! :)
