haha I just heard this story today, pretty funny really
my dilemna with things like this is that I love the character and individuality that pops up in the climbing world however ridiculous it is or whether I agree with the act or not, the characters are a huge part of what make climbing special to me. but because so many people are out there climbing it becomes a matter of management. like, cars are bad for the environment but if there were only a handful of them around then we could afford to not give a shit and let cars be cars because nature will balance itself
same with shitting at the crag, chipping holds, bashing in coach bolts next to cracks, dousing a route in petrol and setting it alight to get rid of the vegetation etc... it seems like 'back in the day' it could just be absorbed into the enormity of the available rock. don't get me wrong, there's still plenty of untouched rock out there, but just look at the popular crags in the blueys or at araps and you cant ignore the massive impact of numbers and thus the need to police shit like this to stop it getting out of hand. we can all just keep doing our own thing, climbing in whatever style and with whatever motivation makes us fuzzy inside & i agree that saying 'if you don't like it then don't climb it' is fair enough to a certain extent, but you do have to draw the line somewhere otherwise the status quo will just degenerate into a circus that none of us could be proud of
