Actually, re the comments made by VR about how much they are "improving"; most of the things they are talking about are issues that should have NEVER been issues.
The mats are and always were a concern, too many injuries altogether. A few times I loaded my car with stacks old pre-loved (on?) mattresses and took them to the gym; I didn't expect any favours, just thought the place needed it, I reckon I must have taken 20+ in over time. (Stu did give me a 10 visit pass once, thanks.) But I was told they no longer wanted to use old mattresses, and were going to use "seconds" from manufacturers, and that the whole thing would be fixed while they were closed over Xmas, I can't see it.
Re-staff numbers and background. Let's face it, they never had enough and most of them were gun oriented. They were never trained properly and always had a shit attitude to climbers and climbing. Most of them couldn't even re-tie a figure 8 if it had been undone. And the belay instruction consisted of: "yep, that's it, have fun"; I rarely if ever saw a staff member check anyone five minutes later. (Too many times I found myself reminding mum's & dad's how to do things, or pointing dangerous practices out to staff that they were blind to). I think the Mill always had the best balance of safety and attitude IMO...
If the staff did their jobs properly there would be no need for pool fencing, as there would be someone on permanent circulation upstairs. Let's face it, that's where most of the kids climb, and most of the injuries will occur.
So don't be fooled kids,; their excuses could also be expressed as "it wasn't done properly before, and if you want it right your gonna have to pay". So maybe we should all sue for distress at being placed in danger for such an extended period...
(I'm raving aren't I...)
