I'm not sure on the Dharma Bums analogy Westie. It's been a while since I read it, but I think the protoganists in Dharma Bums was pretty bloody organised whilst staying in the fire lookouts for long periods. They had radios, maps, shitloads of food, provisions etc., and were never intending to risk getting killed in search of their spiritual nlightenment. What's more, they were contributing to the community whilst satisfying their own ideological bents. In contrast, Alex "Supertramp" was portrayed by Penn as a naive, inconsiderate (regarding his family) and fool hardy drifter - regarding his self imposed isolation, it reminded me of the adage of "be careful what you ask for, you might just get it!".
