I would at least find someone experienced to climb with. Start seconding and then you will see how things are placed, get used to the whole shebang. I reckon going out alone without nothing but reading and some gear is a recipe for a whole new world of pain. Kind of what ed was saying i spose.
I just think that once you're outside, you lose the simplicity. Every situation is slightly different and you have to build the skills to know what is right and what ends in pain. Much easier, safer and quicker to build these skills with someone experienced than alone.
