Are we not talking here specifically about the crack on the 2nd (?) step that Mallory and Irvine would have to had free climbed if they were to get to the summit? I love the whole Mallory Irvine mystery. Did they summit????
But I am pretty sure this crack was free climbed prior to this attempt, from a book I have on the Mallory Irvine saga, Ghosts of Everest I think it is called. Have never heard of the Chinese expedition but wouldnt surprise me. They seem to have quite a bit high up on Everest in the early years.
