Richard,
Just as a thought you (and Nicky and Andy and ....) could have maybe just had our bodies sideways as we went over the lip. Most of the weight would have been on the rope and you would have just slightly scraped your hip on the way through. Would have prevented you from swinging in suddenly.
Of course being right handed when abseiling you'll have wanted your right hip facing the rock.
Just a thought.
